Thank You

Happy Thanksgiving! This is just a post to say "thank you" to all the wonderful people who have helped and supported me so far.

Jim

I cannot begin to describe how amazing Jim has been through all of this. From taking me to the emergency room on the night I hurt myself, to cooking me multiple healthy meals a day, to putting on my shower sleeve, he has been so amazingly helpful and giving. Having a medical situation like this is hard, but having a loving partner to help you sure makes it a hell of a lot easier.

Ryan and Dora

So many thanks go to Ryan and Dora for letting us stay with them for several days after my surgery, and being helpful and upbeat during those days. I was pretty depressed at that time and it was wonderful to be around such good friends.

Christie

Another thank you goes to Christie for her help with navigating my medical care right after my injury. Making decisions about doctors is hard enough when you are not injured, let alone when you have a giant gash in your arm, so it was great to have Christie's support as I was trying to figure out what I was doing.

Also, Christie bought me a special cutting board for chopping food one-handed, as well as a pan holder. Since I love to cook, these are awesome gifts. Thank you, Christie! 

Matt and Paul

Thank you again for the amazing care package. It is wonderful to feel loved...and get a package in the mail!

My Co-Workers

Everyone at work, including my boss, has been so kind and helpful. It's awesome to have such great colleages.

My Doctor

One more thank you goes to my doctor for seeing on the day I first contacted his office. Despite the fact that I was seriously injured, I had a lot of trouble finding a doctor who could see me right away, and it was really great to find someone who took my injury seriously and allowed me to come in immediately for an appointment.

My Physical Therapist

Many thanks to my physical therapist who is kind, sensitive to what I'm going through, and good at what he does. It is really important to have a good PT, and I am happy that I do.

Everyone Else

A final thank you goes out to everyone who called, emailed, texted, or sent me words of encoragement on Facebook. It was really meaningful to have your support and love right after my injury. I really appreciate it, so thank you everyone!

Hello everyone! Meet Turbo Arm! About a month ago my physical therapist made me this crazy custom brace, which I have taken to calling my turbo arm or bionic arm. The brace basically functions to pull the joint at the base of my finger up so I can extend my fingers and have more functionality. At first, I was hesitant to get the brace because it is rather giant and cost $300, but my physical therapist was insistent. I'm glad he was because I actually think the brace is awesome. I wear it between 2 and 4 hours a day (mostly at home or when I'm hidden away in my office) and it does help my hand function more like normal. Also, my physical therapist was telling me last Thursday that using the brace allows me to use my hand and fingers like I used to, which also prevents my brain from entirely remapping the use of my hand. Typing Training Continues

Hi All, It's been quite a while since I've posting, but I wanted to log on and share that my typing has continued to get better and better and I am now up to 94 word per minutes (unfortunately not perfectly accurate, but oh well). When I shared my score last year, I was in the 60's but my form was still a bit awkward. Well, not so much any more! My form is becoming more and more like it used to be and I am getting close to being just as comfortable typing as I used to be.  Joy! I'll post another update soon about how everything else is going, but for now, I'll just say that things are going well!

Another Doctor's Appointment

I had another doctor's appointment this past Thursday. It had been two months since my last appointment so I experienced big changes in the interim, and my doctor was quite impressed. I showed him that I could extend all of my fingers upward and that only my middle finger was really lagging behind. He explained that that is actually normal and is exactly what he would expect if I had undergone a surgery to my forearm muscle. Then he said "It's just your muscle now. Your nerve is healed!" That was excellent news indeed. I do think my nerve still might have some recovering to do yet, but things are looking really good. My doctor didn't even mention anything about a future surgery, so there's a good chance that I won't need one. The goal now is to heal that muscle! I am going to continue with all the healthy things I've been doing, including getting lots of sleep, eating nutritious food, exercising, and weightlifting (squats and arms with light
